Description

A wartime m/39 Fur Hat for Army enlisted men.

The m/39 hat is based on an earlier model known as “Drivers’ Furhat m/22“. It was issued to all the branches starting from the autumn 1939, so just prior to the Winter War. As the norm with the Finnish military, all the branches had their own flair when it comes to colours and materials. The army one had grey wool with grey-ish wool, though they can be anything from white fur to brown.

This hat is a curious wartime fur hat. It is made out of wartime austerity grey serge wool and has been well worn over the years. The original wool finish is still visible under the front flap. The liner is made out of thick yellowish cotton flannel and hand stitched to the hat. The fur is greenish blue grey as result of the chrome tanning method. The front flap is attached with a metal hook and the side flaps attach with a cotton string and there is a curious metal wire on the left flap used for… something.

On the front flap there are a multitude of stamps;

  • Circled M for showing it has been sold off from the army stock
  • Size stamp 56
  • SA and INT 4x showing the manufacturing year for the army
  • Unknown manufacrurers stamp

Some wear, tear and staining hear and there. Most notably on the edge of the frontflap and liner and in the middle back. See photos for details.
