Reproduction of ear covers for the Swedish Skidmössa.
This is a separate ear cover “hat” for the Swedish Skidmössa, literally Ski Hat, which was an item issued to the Svenska Frivilligkåren during the Winter War. Svenska Frivilligkåren was a unit compromised of roughly 9000 Swedish and Norwegian volunteers that functioned under the Finnish military command. They were mainly uniformed by the Swedish and Norwegian militaries, which means that they had their own uniforms different from the Finnish armed forces.
While the Skidmössa is an item that was issued only to the volunteer troops as far as we know, no photographic evidence of this ear cover hat has surfaced from the Winter War. However, they were designed to be used together so we offer it as an extra item you can order if you so choose.
The ear covers are simple wool flaps attached to a cotton head piece and can be tied with a shoestring under the ears. The covers are sewn slightly off center to allow for a variety of headshapes and ear locations – if the flap is too far forward for comfort, you can just turn it around. A simple piece of military headgear.
Most of the original hats have a black shoestring with brown and white spots on them. We are unable to find anything similar, so we’ve opted for a full black shoestring which can be seen in some of the surviving examples of the hat.
Made to order, so sometimes it may take a few weeks for these to be finished.
